Into Unknown
When two brothers get lost in an enchanted wood that is a lot like Wonderland with the creatures and spirits from Spirited Away, you know that you’re in for some interesting storytelling. When they befriend a talking bluebird and have to be on the constant lookout for the dangerous Beast, the story gets better. There's the Woodsman and some other secondary characters to help motivate the plot. Some of the characters are controlled by dark forces, but most are silly and entertaining. This entire series is a bit of a roller coaster from start to finish, but the final product is something fun for an entire family.
When I first heard of Over the Garden Wall, I was sitting in a movie theater. The trailer played and I thought it looked cute, but I quickly forgot about it when the movie began. I never thought that I would actually watch it. Its not because I thought it didn’t look good, it just didn’t seem like something I would enjoy. I can safely say that I was rather wrong. There are so many wonderful aspects to this show that are delightful. From the animation to the music, this show was artistically stunning. The creators also did a fantastic job at giving us something that was geared for children but had enough mature themes throughout it to entertain adults too.
This show was stimulating to watch and not just because of the plot. It is beautifully animated and the color scheme is wonderful. Each character had an individual design that separated them from the rest of the world. At times, the characters and landscapes were somewhat surreal and absurdist. There are bright and dark colors constantly contrasting each other. The style was unique and simplistic, but at the same time rich and satisfying to look at.
I also enjoyed the music. I think that the score is one of the most important parts to any movie or television show and this was done fantastically. Music helps the audience understand what is happening in the scenes. It is astonishing at how one changed note can make an audience feel at ease or tense. The music helps foreshadow the events in a show, and this show was very music heavy. Almost every episode had a moment when music was the most important part to help the plot. Whether it was "Molasses and Potatoes" or just background score, the composer did a fantastic job at capturing the essence of the scenes.
The plot was another beautifully crafted aspect. The creators were able to create an entire epic of two brothers in five twenty-minute episodes. These two boys went on ten different adventures, one for every chapter of the series. They helped people and made friends with a bluebird named Beatrice. The overarching plot line of the series was that these brothers were trapped in The Unknown, woods that could devour you and your soul. The Unknown is run by The Beast, a creature that devours the lost people’s souls. The more lost a person becomes, the more The Beast is able to sway them under his control.
All of these wonderful things being said about this show, I didn’t really care for it. I don’t hold any regrets watching it; it was thought evoking and interesting, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. The comedy in the show was something too goofy and juvenile for my tastes. In my opinion, none of the characters were extremely likable or dislikable. Everyone was moderate and pretty relaxed. This doesn’t mean that I didn’t like the characters, I did. I just didn’t have any strong reactions to them or their situations. This show was something cute, and it was entertaining and beautiful to look at and listen to. Would I watch it again? Probably not. Do I regret watching this show? Not for a second. All of my personal feelings aside, this was extremely well crafted and wonderfully executed. I recommend it to people who enjoy a spooky story with endearing characters.
