Oh the Humanity: Going Down Like A Led Zeppelin
By: Patrick Torres
Led Zeppelin introduces the listener to In Through the Out Door with the soft 57
second intro to In the Evening. Clocking in at 6:50 it’s the second longest
song on the album introducing us to the keyboard playings of John Paul
Jones. We get the usual Zeppelin feel
with Plant delivering his voice oh so similarly in style. John Bonzo Bonham provides the beat we know
he’s famous for effectively and to the point as Jimmy Page plays the guitar
with much intensity. Plant overs a
sign of vulnerability with the lines “In the evening, When the day is done I'm
looking for a woman, but the girl don't come.”
In the Evening gives the listener the Zeppelin feel but very lightly,
one could say the song is a big too synthesized. In Through the Out Door while being new and
of the era, opens the band a new place in their catalog of music, full of
upbeat songs, and good vibes. Zeppelin
seems to be taking a different direction away from their blues driven hard rock
sound.
While being dangerously unique, In Through the Out Door seems to be alienatly the true fans of the band. The title of the album can refer to the bands struggle on getting back into the public eye after dealing with the passing of family members, and leaving Britain for taxation exile. Jones describes the writing process as happening “mainly because [he] had a new toy. [He] had this big new keyboard. And Robert and [him] just got to rehearsals early” quickly rehearsing what they had. A new instrument for writing, and the will to record new material, the two most involved, Plant and Jones, began work on one of the bands most abstract pieces of music.

Led Zeppelin introduced themselves to the world with the blues driven hard rock favorite Led Zeppelin I. While not exactly the blues artists we once saw, stealing old standards and making them their own, Zeppelin took a different step here spanning their repertoire to new genres. In Through the Out Door clocks in at a normal 42:25 offering up seven tracks that range from the short 3:17 to the longer 10:32. All of My Love is a keyboard driven track accompanied by a basic bass line that does the job right. Two favorites All of My Love and Fool in the Rain offer some of Zeppelins better writing and thematic songs of the album.
If looking for a rock n roll album steer clear of the latest release from Zeppelin, do yourself a favor and go for the early work, but hey if you’re a fan give it a listen. Led Zeppelin has fallen into the category of one the best bands in the world. Enjoying international success these four men have created some of the best hard rock there has ever been.
Zeppelin has been one of my favorite bands for a while now, only getting better with every release. Although I feel the direction of this album could have been better I find myself enjoying every song more and more with every listen. Would All of My Love be better with a heavy guitar riff? Some may say yes but I don’t think it would be as effective. Maybe over time this album will mature and become one of the stand out performances from the band. Hopefully this will not be the last the band will create and when that next album comes out may it hit harder than anything they’ve ever produced.
