HIMYM: A Terrible Ending
By: Patrick Torres
How I Met Your Mother is a comedy TV show that recently
concluded its final season. The show
lasted for nine seasons starting in 2005 and ending in the spring of 2014. The basic premise of the show is a long story
of how the main character and narrator, Ted Mosby, tells his two children how
he met their mother. A reoccurring scene
where the two children are sitting on a couch being spoken to by Ted
from the perspective of the camera happens almost every episode at first. The children give their feedback and hound
Ted for taking so long to tell the story.
Basically the whole show is one big flash back to times during Ted and
his four best friend’s young adult lives and follows them throughout the
years. The characters include Ted’s
college roommate and key best friend Marshall Erikson. Marshall is a law student who eventually
becomes a lawyer. Ted and Marshall live
together where the series takes place in New York City in a small two bedroom
apartment. Lilly Aldrin is Marshall’s
wife who he meets his freshman year of college.
The series begins with these three living life in the city and going to
their favorite bar, MacLarens, which happens to be in the bottom of Ted and
Marshall’s apartment building. Quickly
the other two main characters are introduced one being a guy Ted met randomly
at Maclarens and the other, spoiler, Ted’s love interest. Barney Stinson is a suite wearing womanizer
who thinks he is the best thing since slice bread, but it works for him. Ted
meets Barney at Maclarens one night and they’ve been friends ever since. Robin first is introduced at Maclarens as
well when Ted sees her from across the bar and Barney plays a game called “have
you met Ted” where he says that very line and walks away. Quickly Ted and Robin talk and exchange a
funny interaction as Ted gives her permission to throw a drink in his face to make
one of Robin’s friends happy. The five
main characters fall into a tight group throughout the first season and from
then on the stories get crazier and crazier.
Now that you are filled in a little I want to talk about the way the series ended. Throughout the whole nine seasons the answer to whom Ted’s wife is going to be seems to be right around the corner at the end of every season. As you can imagine this keeps the viewer on the edge of their seats waiting for the big day. This is a great idea for a series in my opinion because there is always that anticipation that keeps the viewer coming back for more. But anyways, the final season of the show revolves around one particular weekend. If you don’t know the show this may come to a shock to you but the weekend is the weekend of Robin and Barney’s wedding. During the series lovers come and go for all characters and eventually Robin and Barney wind up together. As you watch the show I can understand that that wouldn’t be a huge surprise but now that I am writing this and explaining I realize that it is a little crazy. The only reason why Robin was ever integrated into the group was because of how much Ted liked her.
One thing I hated about the last season was the fact that it was only revolved around one weekend and happened in real time. The past seasons focused on the flashbacks of the groups antics. I noticed that as the seasons proceeded that every episode did not involve its own plot line but instead started to blur together to tell one big story. The first couple of season’s episodes were very fun to watch as everyone had a different story. The later seasons started to combine episodes to tell bigger stories that lasted longer than just one episode. This ultimately was brought to the extreme (, which I hated), during the last season that only spans three days. Due to this fact I was very disappointed with the last season.

Another aspect that really got me annoyed was the fact that the characters seemed to change from who they originally were. Now I understand that the series takes place over many years and people do change, but it seemed to me that the writers were suddenly changed or something along those lines. Characters started to do things I would never expect them to do and some seemed to be fully flipped 180 degrees in the opposite direction. Two happen to be Barney’s single mother, who was a partier in the 70’s, and Barney’s gay black brother. Both of whom were introduced as being a certain way. As I watched the final season everything I had ever thought about them was questioned and seemed backwards.
I in fact love HIMYM and enjoyed it up to the very end but I was indeed very upset with the way it ended. As you know the whole gang is at Robin and Barney’s wedding. The episodes involve the days leading up to the wedding and eventually reveals who Ted’s wife is. So very exciting yes, the mother of Ted’s kids is introduced at the very beginning of the season but she does not meet Ted till about half way through. I and millions of viewers were ecstatic to finally see who this girl was and how happy she makes Ted. My problem with this though is that the mother is only in the last season and eventually gets killed off. The final episode involves Ted spending time throughout the years with his wife and cuts to Ted in a hospital by her side. No more information is given. The scene cuts and that’s it, the mother is killed off and now what? We have waited all this time to find out who the mother is, and when she finally comes into the story they kill her. But really what the most annoying and upsetting thing is that Ted is talking to his kids about their mother and they figure out that Ted is telling the story of how he met their mother so that he can in fact ask them if it is okay to go after their aunt Robin again. And to throw on more things to the burning pile of crap, the kids talk about their mother like she never existed and tell Ted to go after Robin. As you can probably predict, the ending involves Ted telling the kids thank you for giving him permission and then finishes with Ted running to Robin’s place, like he’s done multiple times, and looking at her in her window from the street. But I think I forgot to mention another super annoying part of the lame last season which is the fact that Robin and Barney just split up for the most stupid reasons on earth. So now Robin is single and so is Ted. And what we have is the final episode where the creators SLAP everyone in the face and say the mother has nothing to do with anything anywhere and that Ted and Robin end up together after everything that has happened.
The finale had me almost in tears because the series was over and won’t be coming back but at the same time had me wanting to throw anything I could find in my arm span through my wall.
